The territory where Mogoro stands shows traces of human settlements since the prehistoric epoch: Cuccurada pre-protostoric “Cyclopean” settlement, Puisteris nuraghic village. Then, there are many nuraghic era settlements and the Phoenician and Roman rule remains.

In the historic centre, ancient buildings still predominate. They are built utilizing black basalt extracted from the pits situated on the tableland where the village stands. The little windows of the houses are decorated by white lime cornices; the entrance is constituted by a big wood street door which gives access to the internal courtyard.

Mogoro is well known all over Sardinia for Sardinian carpets manufacturing. The ancient textile art, handed down from generation to generation, holds today a crucial role in the local economy. Since 1961 the village dedicates to that ancient tradition a Fair which takes place in the summer, between July and August, that is able to attract very many visitors coming from all Italy, to admire the precious handmade products.

Local craft includes also the production of chests, plate-racks and tables in juniper, chestnut, beech or walnut, carved following ancient techniques.

Finally, Mogoro achieves excellence in the eating-and-drinking field: the village bakers daily take out of the oven “su civrasciu”, “su coccoi” and flat breads, as well as local sweets, such as “pani’e saba”, pabassini, doughnuts, bianchini, soft ricotta cheese made from cow's or goat's milk (formaggelle), “seadas”, “gattou” and other almonds sweets. There are also niche productions like goat's milk cheese and other biological productions. The best of breed of Mogoro is the production of fine mullet roe, whereby an excellent botargo is obtained and is exported all over the world.
